March Update

I always look forward to turning the calendar on the month of February and seeing the first day of spring quickly approaching. The sun seems to shine a bit brighter and longer in the afternoon, and the snow piles get a little smaller each day. What the weather will look like for the month of March remains to be seen, but the decline of COVID, and rolling back of a nearly two-year mask mandate sure gets the month off to a great start. 

Our agronomy team has been busy since the last fall fertilizer application getting ready for the next spring rush. The operations team has been busy going through all the equipment to make sure it’s in good working order, greasing up the new sprayers, trucks and other equipment we’ve purchased this year, updating technology and precision tools on existing equipment, and conducting hours of training. In addition, the crop advisors and admin staff have been putting the finishing touches on crop plans and seed orders, wrapping up input financing and nutrient management plans, hiring and training new staff including college interns to help scout fields, and maybe taking a little time away to get rested for what is sure to be long days and short nights ahead. 

I briefly mentioned last month that we are always looking for good people to help fill seasonal openings in our agronomy division. Each year we try to fill about 100 full and part time positions at our eleven agronomy locations. These positions can last from six weeks up to eight months. Most seasonal positions involve delivering product to our members or direct to fields to keep our custom application machines running smoothly. If you or someone you know is interested in seasonal or year-round employment, please contact Shayla at our Mt Horeb office or stop by one of the agronomy locations. The hours can be flexible and available up to seven days a week. If agronomy work isn’t for you, ask about openings at any of our other locations. While we continue to manage challenges with labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and product availability, dealing with adversity has become the norm as we prepare for the next season. As I write this update on February 24th, half a world away the Russian invasion of Ukraine now adds another level of complexity and uncertainty into future business planning and carrying out our daily tasks. From skyrocketing energy markets to drastic swings in grain and fertilizer, having a local partner that has the financial ability and inventory capacity to help you or your operation manage the challenges is more important than ever. Temperature fluctuations during winter tend to present challenges for calf raisers across the Midwest and many farms will see an uptick in respiratory issues. More calves are being raised in barns or other housing with greater protection from the elements and these structures rely on natural ventilation to provide clean, fresh air to the calves. This works well in the summertime; however, as doors, windows and curtains are closed in the winter, providing sufficient air exchanges to keep calves healthy can be challenging.
