Premier Co-op joins Truterra network to bring
new sustainability and profitability opportunities to local producers.

Premier Co-op announced today that it has joined the TruTerra network. Truterra is an agricultural sustainability business that offers consultation, tools and solutions for the ag and food value chain. As a market leader, Truterra works with farmers and their ag retailers to support farmers at every stage of their sustainability journey to improve the agronomic, economic and environmental sustainability of their operations for the long term.

Being part of the Truterra network will allow Premier Co-op to offer local producers Truterra’s foundation of insights, data and products. This could help farmers manage risk and maximize natural resources to generate a return on investment. Through Truterra, producers are also better positioned to access opportunities to be rewarded for stewardship, including carbon and emerging ecosystem services markets.

"By joining the Truterra network, we are positioning to offer our members new market opportunities that are emerging with the public and private sector funding to incentivize members who adopt practice changes. Getting our members access to these programs is part of our cooperative's vision to be the leader in our trade area by looking for opportunities to better serve our customers,” said David Fiene, chief operating officer of Premier Cooperative.

“With the addition of Premier Coop to our ag retailer network, Truterra is able to expand its footprint in Wisconsin and provide more farmers with the tools and opportunities needed to advance their conservation journey,” said Tom Ryan, president of Truterra. “We’re proud to work with ag retailers like Premier who support farmers with their on-farm stewardship.”

Truterra will help Premier producers determine if they qualify for opportunities to earn money by improving their stewardship. In 2021, Truterra launched their soil-based carbon credit program, and in the first two years of the program, farmers have been paid over $9 million for more than 462,000 metric tons of carbon.

Every year, I get fooled by some article on milk pricing and the forecasters predicting the price that we will see in the future. They take on the nearly impossible quest of prediction with the same confidence of the newscaster reading the weather on my tv, and we all know how that went this spring. In February the mailbox price was in the $15 cwt range and now, fast forward to June, we are around $19 cwt. On a 600-cow dairy, that’s about $75,000 a month difference equating to just under a cool million in a year. How does your farm handle this volatility? I don’t think there’s a magic cookie cutter answer in how we manage this, and it appears volatility is here to stay in commodity prices.

By the time you receive this newsletter, Independence Day will have gone by. I hope you enjoyed the day off. I should have done this in last month’s newsletter but let me give you some fireworks advice in case you have left over munitions. The most important thing to remember is after you light the fuse, Mr. Fireworks is no longer your friend. Then, while fleeing, don’t zig when you should have zagged. Now you know.
