Propane Tank

August 2024

This week is exciting for me. We’re remodeling the office in Mt. Horeb so I’m moving my stuff out for a few weeks. I’m not saying a remodel is long overdue, but the current office carpeting is eligible for the senior citizen discount at participating restaurants.

This is my 30th year at the co-op and I’m combing through stuff that I haven’t looked at in years. It’s bringing back a lot of memories. I’ve met some inspiring people during my tenure, and I’ve made a lot of friends. It made me realize how fortunate I have been to work here. It also made me realize that to not be on the next season of Hoarders, many old files are heading to the shredder.

While we’re getting a new look in the Mt. Horeb office, the new office at the Lancaster Agronomy plant will also be completed soon. Our Lancaster energy staff will be moving to the new office after it is finished. If you haven’t been there, the agronomy center address is 5371 Commercial Rd. Consolidating multiple offices into one will allow us to better serve our customers whether they are walking in or calling the office. We’re shooting for the end of August to be in our new digs.

We are conducting leak checks on any propane systems that do not have a test on the records this summer. If you are contacted to get a leak check done on your system, please assist us in getting it done. If your system doesn’t have any pilot lights, it may be possible to perform a leak test at the tank. Thank you for your consideration.

If you haven’t sent in your propane contract yet, we will still accept it but contact your local Premier Energy office to make sure the price is the same. With the volatility of energy markets, the sooner the better.

One of the changes to our contracts that you may have noticed was the return address on the envelope was to an address in Milwaukee. The contracts went to what’s called a lockbox at a bank. From there, the payments were processed and delivered to our bank account and the contracts were forwarded to us so that we get them entered into our system. It is a much faster and more secure process, resulting in less mistakes and freeing up our member service reps so that they could focus on customer service.

If you’ve been kicking around the idea of converting a vehicle to run on propane, it may be timely to contact us. There are two incentives out there. One is from the Wisconsin Propane Education and Research Council that amounts to $3,500 per vehicle. There is another one from CHS (Cenex/Harvest States) that amounts to $2,500 per vehicle. The CHS incentive is set to expire at the end of August, and I can’t guarantee that they will have another incentive after that point. If you are thinking about doing it, there’s no time like the present. Conversions cost $6,800 to $7,300, depending on the vehicle. My savings per mile on my F150 is 8.8 cents per mile. At 100,000 miles my savings were $8,800 and I’ve saved almost $17,000 so far. That will buy a lot of bells and whistles on my next truck.

Labor Day weekend will be upon us before you hear from me again. I hope you enjoy it with friends and family. Thank you for your business

Over the past few weeks, crude oil prices have seen a welcome decline. However, recent geopolitical events—including airstrikes on the Houthis in Yemen, renewed conflict in Gaza, and a weaker dollar driving crude demand—have led to price stabilization for now.

The fertilizer industry buzz continues to revolve around tariffs, what they will look like, when they will be put in place, if at all, and how it impacts pricing of those commodities going forward. For now, tariffs are messy as there are more questions than answers. Outside of the tariff news, fertilizer market news continues to reflect the narrative and trend from the first of the year.
